What to do if You Have Experienced Flooding or Water Damage
Flooding or water damage to your home can be difficult to deal with. If you are going to handle the job yourself there are some basic clean up and repair tips that will make your clean up efforts safe and more effective.
1. If you have experienced significant flooding make sure the power is off in the affected area. Do not wade into deep water with the power on. If you are not sure how to safely turn the power off call a professional. If water is leaking from a broken pipe or appliance hose, shut your water off. For plumbing repairs you may want to call a professional plumber. Electronics should be removed from the wet area first, water can immediately destroy electronics and appliances. All items should be removed from the affected area.
2. The excess water must be removed. After the flood water drops you will need to remove the excess water. If you have standing water, pumps or a shop vac designed to vacuum water will work well. For wet areas mopping and towels will remove the water. If the source of the backup was sewage or contaminated water be cautious, usually anything porous will have to be thrown out because of the risk of bacteria and infection. If you feel like you need help call a professional water damage restoration company.
3. You will need to completely dry the area. If it is warm outside, open your windows, ventilation is the most effective way to dry out your structure. Blowers and dehumidifiers are very effective in reducing moisture.
4. Mold damage after the initial flooding is a common occurrence. Look for areas that the water may have traveled, hardwood floors and walls can hold water if not dried properly. A mold mitigation specialist can test for mold and properly remove any harmful mold from your home.
